Wedding table games: 7 ideas that don't need a host

Not every couple wants a compère and party games in the middle of the room. Many prefer guests to have fun at their tables, at their own pace — no pressure and no performing.

Here are ideas you can prepare yourselves and leave on the tables. Most of them work without a host; a short announcement from the DJ is enough.

1. The “Find someone who…” game

Every guest gets a 4 × 4 card of prompts such as “…can waltz” or “…knows a childhood nickname of one of the couple”. They look for people in the room who match a field and write down their names. It is the only game on this list that takes guests away from their own table.

When every guest has a different card, nobody can fill it in with their neighbour. You'll find the full prompt list in our collection of game ideas.

2. A quiz about the couple

A sheet with a dozen questions: where did you meet, who said “I love you” first, who is the better cook. Each table answers together, and you announce the results after the meal. It brings a single table together nicely.

3. Conversation prompts on the tables

A few question cards in a holder in the middle of the table: best trip, first concert, a family tradition. A gentle nudge for people who don't know each other and are looking for a topic.

4. A guest book with prompts

Instead of a blank book: cards with prompts such as “advice for your first year of marriage” or “a place you must see together”. Guests fill them in at the tables, and you keep them as a memento.

5. A photo checklist

A list of phone photos to take: with someone from the other family, with someone you met today, by the cake. Guests upload them to a shared album through a QR code on the table.

6. Guessing games

A jar of sweets to guess, the first-dance song, the date of your first date. Simple, but it gives the table something to talk about.

7. When and how to announce it

Put the games on the tables before the starters and ask the DJ or the wedding party for one short announcement. Set an end, such as the cake cutting, and small prizes.

Don't do everything at once. One game that gets guests away from their tables and one that brings a table together are enough for the whole evening.
